MOBILE, Ala. -- Behind another strong effort in net from junior Haleigh Mercer, the Troy Trojans battled the UAB Blazers to a 1-1 draw Sunday night at the Jaguar Classic hosted by South Alabama.
The draw extends Troy's (2-0-2) unbeaten streak to four consecutive matches and marks the second consecutive weekend where Troy earned a Friday victory and a Sunday draw.
Once again, senior Kiersten Edlund found the back of the net for Troy, scoring for the second consecutive match and for the third time in four matches. The real star, however, was Mercer, who made 12 saves between the pipes.
Troy struck first Sunday evening, when senior Maddie Brune picked up a loose ball and found a cutting Edlund down the left-side of the pitch. Edlund received the pass and fired a beautiful left-footed shot into opposite side of the net.
The Trojans were able to hold onto the slim lead until the final seconds of the first half when UAB tied the match with just 15 seconds remaining.
Both teams had their chances in the second half and both overtime periods, but neither side was able to find the back of the net. Sophomore Kendra Cashion placed two of her three shots on goal, while senior Kate Lorenz also recorded three shots.
The Trojans return to action Thursday evening when Jacksonville State comes to Troy. Kickoff from Troy Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m.
GED TALKS:
"Overall it was another fantastic team effort. While we didn't play our best soccer, in part due to the quality of the opposition, but we deserved to come away with a positive result due to our united effort and work rate. Again I am a very proud coach this evening."
