TROY, Ala. - Troy head soccer coach Jake Wyman announced the addition of Jonny Ellis as assistant coach on Thursday.
Ellis arrives in Troy after a successful tenure at Belhaven University, where he played a key role in one of the most successful stretches in program history. Over eight seasons on staff, including six as the top assistant, Ellis helped guide the program to new heights, winning 10-plus matches four of the last five seasons and its first Collegiate Conference of the South Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2025.
"We are excited to welcome Jonny, his wife Beth, and their son Finley to Troy," Wyman said. "We loved everything about Jonny. He is very passionate and motivated about coaching and getting involved in all the aspects of the program. He helped rebuild Belhaven into winning their first Conference Championship as well as qualifying for their first NCAA tournament. Jonny will be an immediate asset to the program and our recruiting efforts."
Over the past three seasons, Ellis has helped the Blazers establish themselves as one of the CCS's most consistent programs, advancing to the conference tournament semifinal or final each season. Belhaven posted back-to-back 13-win seasons in 2023 and 2024, the most wins across a two-year stretch since 2001–02, before helping the program to a 14-win championship season this past fall.
"I'm incredibly excited to join the coaching staff at Troy Women's Soccer and begin this next chapter," Ellis said. "From my very first conversation with Jake Wyman, it was clear that we share a strong alignment in our vision for the program and the standards we want to set. Coach Wyman's passion and belief in what Troy Soccer can become made this opportunity extremely compelling. I'm grateful for the trust he's placed in me, and I'm ready to work tirelessly to help move this program forward, attract and develop outstanding student-athletes, and build something the Troy community can be proud of. Go Trojans!"
Ellis played a key role in both recruiting and player development during his tenure. He helped coach more than 30 All-Conference selections across the CCS and American Southwest Conference, along with two United Soccer Coaches All-Region honorees: Kaci Craft (2023) and Emma Antonoplos (2024).
Before being elevated to assistant coach in 2020-21, Ellis spent two seasons as a Graduate Assistant for both the men's and women's soccer programs at Belhaven, and also served as the New England Assistant Regional Director for YESsoccer and as a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Bridgeport women's program. His coaching background includes extensive experience at the club and premier levels in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut.
Originally from Bristol, England, Ellis holds a UEFA C License, a USSF C License, and a Level 1 Futsal certification. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Coaching and Physical Education from the University of St Mark & St John (Plymouth, UK) and completed his Master of Science in Leadership at Belhaven University in May 2020.
