TROY, Alabama – Appalachian State used a pair of 3-run innings and held off a late Troy rally to defeat the Trojans, 9-7, Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field to salvage a game in the Sun Belt series.
The Mountaineers (16-21, 8-9 Sun Belt) broke open a 2-2 game with a three-spot in the fifth inning thanks to four hits – two doubles – and a pair of walks. The App State lead swelled to 9-3 in the top of the eighth after three more runs crossed, including one after two Troy (21-19, 9-9) throwing errors on one play.
The Trojans made it interesting in the home half of the eighth with four runs and advancing the tying run to third base. Chase Smartt and Hunter Mercer led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Cole Prestegard was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Rigsby Mosley, who finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, promptly cleared the bases with a towering blast to the deepest part of the ballpark for a 3-run triple. Drew Frederic followed with an RBI ground out to pull Troy within one, 8-7. Dalton Sinquefield doubled with two outs and moved to third on a wild pitch but was stranded.
Mercer finished with two hits for the second straight game while Reed Smith added a pair of hits and Chase Smartt added his second home run of the weekend as part of a two-hit day.
Robbie Young provided the power for App State with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning and he finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Brandon Boone (4-2) picked up the win after allowing three runs – one earned – on eight hits over 5.1 innings; he struck out seven and walked two.
Sadler Goodwin (3-5) took the loss for Troy after allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings; he struck out three and walked two.
Troy travels to Samford on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with the Bulldogs before a three-game Sun Belt set at Little Rock over the weekend.
