Troy Drops Tight Contest at Samford

Birmingham, Ala. – Troy was unable to overcome an early deficit and dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Samford in non-conference baseball action at J.L. Griffin Field on Wednesday night.
The Trojans (21-20) out hit the Bulldogs (31-11) eight to four but three costly walks in the second inning would give Samford the edge it would need to hold off Troy.
At the plate, senior Chase Smartt led the way going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double while freshman Logan Cerny followed behind with a two-hit performance (2-3) with two runs scored.
Freshman Taylor Pridgen (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season after tossing 1.1 innings giving up three runs but tallying three strikeouts.
The Trojans struck first in the top half of the second as Smartt hit an RBI double down the right field line that scored Cerny who reached base on a triple to right center field. In the bottom half of the inning, Samford drew two RBI-walks and forced a Troy fielding error to plate three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
Troy would not let the Bulldogs gain more than a two-run lead as the Trojans came within one run twice (3-2, fourth inning; 4-3 seventh inning). Troy biggest threat to tie the game came in the eighth inning with runners on first and second with one out but the Bulldogs racked up a strikeout and forced a ground out to shortstop to end Troy's threat.
