Troy Splits Doubleheader with SE Louisiana, Trojans Win Series

TROY, Alabama – Drew Frederic drove in three runs and hit his third home run of the season to pace Troy in a doubleheader spilt against Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field. Troy's 8-3 victory in the opener clinched the series for the Trojans, while the Lions salvaged a game with a 19-4 win in the nightcap.
Frederic finished 3-for-7 on the day with a pair of runs scored and three RBIs with all of his damage coming in the opener for Troy (6-5). Rigsby Mosley also added three hits on the day with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.
The Trojans host Tennessee on Tuesday night at the Hoover Met in the second annual Hoover Classic. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. with a Trojan Tour event starting at 5:15 p.m.
Game One – Troy 8, Southeastern Louisiana 3
Grant Stewart tossed five innings of two-hit ball and Troy used a pair of big innings en route to an 8-3 victory in the opener.
Stewart (1-1) struck out a trio of batters and worked around three walks and a pair of hit batters before turning the ball over to the bullpen to close out the victory.
The Trojans broke open a 1-1 game with a three-spot in the fifth inning thanks to back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Drew Frederic and Rigsby Mosley. Frederic finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Mosley added two hits.
Frederic led off the home half of the eighth inning with a towering blast over the 27-foot wall in right field for his third home run of the year to stretch the Troy lead to 5-1. Dalton Sinquefield put the game out of reach with a two-run double to right with the bases loaded later in the frame and Caleb Bartolero capped the scoring for Troy with a sac fly one batter later.
Southeastern Louisiana (3-8) added a pair in the ninth to set the final score. Will Warren (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the Lions after allowed four runs on four hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Ryan Fultz and Lance Johnson combined for three scoreless innings of relief for the Trojans out of the bullpen.
Game Two – Southeastern Louisiana 19, Troy 4
Southeastern Louisiana took advantage of a Troy school record seven hit batters plus 11 walks issued by Troy pitchers to take the nightcap 19-4. The Lions scored four or more runs in three different innings and belted out 16 hits against six different Troy pitchers.
The Lions built a 5-0 lead with a run in the first followed by a four-spot in the third inning. Troy answered back with two runs in the home half of the third on RBI groundouts by Reed Smith and Drew Frederic after Caleb Bartolero and Donovan Whibbs led off the inning with back-to-back hits.
However, Southeastern took control from there with two runs in the fourth and five in the fifth inning. Preston Faulkner led the Lions with three hits and three RBIs in four at-bats, while four others finished with two hits each.
Carlisle Koestler (2-0) picked up the win for Southeastern after allowing three runs on four hits over six innings of work.
Hunter Mercer blasted his second career home run in the bottom of the ninth inning for the final of Troy's six hits. Max Newton (0-2) took the loss for Troy after allowing five runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.

• Troy improved to 41-15 all-time under head coach Mark Smartt when scoring six or more runs in a game … the Trojans' eight runs in the opening game of the doubleheader marked a season high.
Notable
• Drew Frederic extended his team-leading extra-base hit total with a double and home run on the day; the Trojan junior now has 40 career extra-base hits.
• Troy now leads the all-time series with Southeastern Louisiana by a 9-6 margin and have evened the series (3-3) at Riddle-Pace Field.
• Troy set a school record by hitting seventh batters in the second game of the doubleheader. The Trojans had twice hit five opposing players prior to tonight's game – Southern Miss (2012) and Alabama State (2013).
