Troy to Meet Tennessee in Hoover Classic
3/4/2019 10:47:00 AM | Baseball
TROY, Ala. – Troy and undefeated Tennessee will clash in a non-conference showdown at the 2019 Hoover Classic at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium Tuesday with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
Â
The Trojans (6-5) are fresh off a series win over perennial Southland Conference power Southeastern Louisiana at Riddle-Pace Field this past weekend. Troy used a solid mix of good offense and pitching to clinch the set in the first two games.
Â
Offensively, Sadler Goodwin hit three home runs in the week and Rigsby Mosley increased his doubles total by three. Mosley's seven doubles this season rank second nationally and are tied for the league-lead – he also leads the team with a .405 batting average.
Â
A couple of veteran relievers especially shined in the past week – Cory Gill and Lance Johnson. Gill picked up his third save of the year by striking out the side in order to close out Friday's win over SLU – he is tied for 10th nationally in saves. Johnson didn't allow a hit – only one baserunner – through 6.1 innings of relief on the week.
Â
Goodwin (0-1, 6.75) will get the start on the mound against the Volunteers (12-0). The senior righty took a no-decision in his last start – working 4.2 innings and scattering six hits around three strikeouts in Troy's series-clinching win against Louisiana Tech on Feb. 24.
Â
Ticket prices are $5 for general admission for adults and are available for purchase through the Hoover Met Ticket Office – kids 10 and under will be admitted for free. The gates will open at 5 p.m., and parking will be $5 (cash only).
Â
In conjunction with the game, Troy Athletics will kick off its first Trojan Tour event of 2019 on the first base patio before the game. The event, which is free of charge but does require a ticket to the game, will feature a reception as head football coach Chip Lindsey and Director of Athletics Jeremy McClain will address the crowd. The Trojan Tour event will feature free food, soft drinks, a cash bar and the ability to take pictures with T-Roy. Fans in attendance will also have the chance to win great prizes courtesy of Troy Athletics and purchase football tickets.Â
Â
SCOUTING THE VOLS
Tennessee has leaned on a stellar pitching staff to remain one of four undefeated baseball teams in Division I. The Vols lead the country in hits allowed per nine innings, shutouts, strikeout-to-walk ratio, walks allowed per nine innings and WHIP – UT will look to RHP Sean Hunley for the start Tuesday.
Â
At the plate, Justin Ammons leads the team with a .412 batting average and Evan Russell is tied with Troy's Rigsby Mosley for second nationally with seven doubles this year.
