HOOVER, Ala. – Tennessee remained undefeated with a 11-2 victory over Troy in the 2019 Hoover Classic at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium Tuesday night in midweek, non-conference action.
Â
The 21st-ranked Volunteers (13-0) remained one of the four unbeaten teams in Division I college baseball this season, thanks in part to seven unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Luc Lipcius drove in three runs in the ballgame to lead UT as a part of a 2-for-3 day.
Â
Troy (6-6) responded to a two-run second from the Vols with a two-run inning of its own – cracking the scoreboard on an RBI single from Austin Garofalo. The Trojans then loaded the bases for Manning Early, who was robbed of a base hit by a diving snag in left center but picked up an RBI in the process on the sacrifice fly.
Â
After going up 4-2 on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, Tennessee delivered a big blow to the Trojans' morale – scoring two runs on a blooper into no-man's land with two outs in the inning. The Vols all but iced it away with four more runs in the seventh on a two-run triple from Lipcius and an RBI double.
Â
Despite a strong start, Sadler Goodwin (0-2) wore the loss for the Trojans after allowing three runs – two earned – on just four hits in five innings of work, fanning four batters in the process. Tennessee starter Sean Hunley (3-0) scattered five hits, fanned two batters and allowed two runs in five innings of work to improve on his unblemished record.
Â
Noteworthy
• Sophomore Rigsby Mosley extended his career-long hitting streak to six games with a single in the bottom of the third inning.
Â
• Troy broke its streak of five straight games with at least one home run Tuesday night. In the game the Trojans failed to record an extra-base hit for the first time in 2019. Entering the game, Troy ranked in the top 25 nationally in both team homers and doubles.
Â
• The Trojans fell to 23-16 in midweek contests under head coach Mark Smartt. The team is 6-10 in neutral site games in that time span.
Â
Up Next
The Trojans will return home for their final non-conference series of the season against in-state foe North Alabama this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The series will serve as Troy baseball's Alumni Weekend, when it invites all former players, coaches and support staff back to Riddle-Pace Field.
