TROY, Alabama – After jumping out to a four-run advantage in top of the first inning, Arkansas State led from wire to wire in a 10-4 Sun Belt conference victory Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field to secure its first ever sweep of Troy.
The Red Wolves (14-7, 3-0) plated four runs in the opening frame, benefitting from a couple of Trojans (9-11, 0-3) errors and a two-run double from Kyle MacDonald. Only two of the runs were earned, both credited to Troy starter Max Newton (1-3) who wore the loss after 0.1 innings on the mound.
Troy answered with a run in the bottom of the first on a Chase Smartt RBI single, then cut the lead to one with a two-run homer from Cole Prestegard in the third. However, A-State answered with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead right back.
Dalton Sinquefield led the bottom of the seventh off with a double off the scoreboard in right, then came around to score on a fielder's choice to keep things close. Sinquefield once again tallied three hits in the contest – his fourth three-hit game in five games this week. He and Drew Frederic led the team at the plate with 3-for-5 and 3-for-4 performances, respectively.
A-State responded with the dagger in the top of the eighth, though – a two-run double from Alex Howard to put things out of reach. Howard led the club with a 3-for-5 game and drove in three runs in the contest. The Red Wolves added one more in the ninth to push the lead to 10-4, where it stood.
Jack Jumper (2-1) earned the win with four solid relief innings – allowing just one run on three hits and striking out two batters.
Quotable – Troy head coach Mark Smartt
"All credit goes to those guys. They didn't make a mistake; they played sound baseball all weekend. But, we've got to focus on making ourselves better these next few days. I don't really care if we're playing the Yankees or the Red Sox this week, we've still got to figure out how to make ourselves a better baseball team."
