TROY, Alabama – Troy snapped a five-game skid with a two-hit shutout, 12-0 win over Maine in midweek action at Riddle-Pace Field Wednesday night.
The Trojans (10-11) struck first on back-to-back homers from Sadler Goodwin and Cole Prestegard in the second inning. Goodwin hit his team-leading fifth long ball of the season – his fourth over the right field wall – and Prestegard followed with a shot off the batters' eye two pitches later. Prestegard finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI, a homer and a double.
Senior Chase Smartt drove in two more runs in the third inning with a two-RBI single – one of his two hits in the contest. Overall, seven different Trojans tallied at least one hit and four drove home multiple runs in the contest.
Troy benefitting from seven strong pitching performances on the staffed night – only two pitchers allowed more than one base runner in their outings. Sadler Goodwin (1-3) picked up the win with three innings of scoreless, one-hit work. Grant Stewart, Zack Lightsey, Ryan Fultz, Lance Johnson, Rush Hixon and Cory Gill finished out the game with an inning on the mound apiece and gave up just one hit while fanning a combined seven batters.
Both of Maine's (1-17) base hits came off the bat of Dothan, Ala., native Jeffrey Omohundro, who finished 2-for-3 in the ballgame. Sam McCarthy (0-1) wore the loss after allowing five runs on four hits and four walks in two innings.
Troy struck big in the fifth inning, plating five runs on four hits in the frame – highlighted by a no-doubt, two-run shot from Manning Early, his first of 2019 after launching five in his freshman campaign last season. Two more runs came across in the bottom of the seventh as Tyler Head ripped a two-RBI single up the middle to cap the scoring.
Quotable – Troy head coach Mark Smartt
"We pitched very well, we hit very well and we defended very well; and we haven't done that often this year. It was a comfortable win, which we haven't had in a while. It's good to win. It's good for our guys to win. Our guys work hard, they give their best effort and they want to have success. We had a great practice day yesterday and it translated to a big win tonight."
