HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Connor Futrell fired a 4-under 138 on the opening day of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate to sit tied for second individually while Troy is tied for third at 3-under following Monday's action at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
Troy carded 35 birdies on Monday which was good for second in the 13-team field, while true freshman Will McFadden paced the field with 11 birdies in his first two collegiate rounds.
Futrell, a sophomore, made the turn in the opening round at 3-under and sat 2-under entering the final two holes. Troy's returning leader in stroke average calmly sank back-to-back birdies to finish his first round of the season at 4-under. He added three more birdies around three bogeys on his second trip through the course to shoot an even 71.
Mercer's Stanton Schorr carries a 1-shot lead over Futrell and Southern Miss' Matt Lorenz into Tuesday's final round, while McFadden is four shots off the pace in a tie for 10thplace.
McFadden had a bumpy opening 18 holes to his collegiate career with a pair of double-bogeys and three bogeys, but he showed some firepower with five birdies to close the round at 2-over. After making the turn at even with two birdies and two bogeys in the second round, the Mobile, Ala., native carded four birdies on the back, including three over the final four holes, to shoot 3-under.
Dean Martin and Jake Tiffin are both eying an under-par start to their seasons as they sit 1-over following Monday's 36 holes after shooting an identical 143 (72-71). Martin sprinkled in seven birdies and Tiffin added five as they sit tied for 19thplace.
Redshirt freshman Eli Charron also made his debut and sits tied for 72ndplace at 14-over par and freshman Bryson Bianco, who played as an individual, is one stroke ahead of his teammate in 71stplace.
Mercer holds a 1-shot lead over Southern Miss for the team title, while Troy is just two shots off the pace in a tie for third with Missouri State.
