TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's golf team opens its 2018-19 season on Monday and Tuesday at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Miss at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
Second-year head coach Bart Barnes will roll out a lineup mixed with veterans and youth led by a pair of regulars in last year's lineup – Dean Martin and Connor Futrell.
"We've been working really hard for this season and we're chomping at the bit ready to go," Barnes said. "We're expecting a great event and know that it is a well-run tournament. It is an old-style course that will be in great shape and should suit our players well. I think there are going to be opportunities for birdies if we are a little patient."
Futrell, a sophomore, is Troy's top returner from a year ago with a 74.74 stroke average and +3.21 score vs. par, which ranked second on the squad. His five rounds under par and two in the 60s led the Trojans. Martin was close behind with a 75.04 stroke average and he led the Trojans with 96.3 percent of his rounds counting towards the team card.
"While we may have been searching for an identity last year, this group is hungry to make their own names and not trying to live up to something that happened in the past," Barnes said.
Junior Jake Tiffin, who appeared in 15 rounds last season, will get the nod in the opener along with redshirt freshman Eli Charron and true freshman Will McFadden. Another true freshman, Bryson Bianco, will compete as an individual.
T-Time
Monday's opening two rounds will feature a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. with Troy playing alongside Southern Miss and Mercer; the Trojans will open on the first three holes.
The Field
Troy, Southern Miss, Mercer, Stephen F. Austin, Central Arkansas, Missouri State, Nicholls State, Bowling Green, Florida Gulf Coast, Southeastern Louisiana, Samford, New Orleans, and Winthrop
