MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – Troy freshman Connor Futrell shot a 2-under 69 to lead Troy in Monday's second round of the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship at the Raven Golf Course. Troy shot 9-over on the day and slipped a spot into sixth, however the Trojans are just three shots back of qualifying for the match play championship.
Futrell, who climbed 15 spots into a tie for 10th place, carded five birdies on the day and made his move on the back nine. After splitting a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys before the turn, Futrell actually moved to 1-over after a bogey on No. 11. He then birdied three of the next four holes and finished with three straight pars for the 2-under 69.
Troy enters Tuesday's final round three back of UT Arlington for the fourth and final spot in the Sun Belt Match Play Championship. Coastal Carolina blistered the course to the tune of 9-under to grab a 17-shot lead over Georgia Southern. Texas State sits in third at 19-over for the tournament, while UTA is 20-over, ULM is 21-over and Troy is 23-over.
"We've giving ourselves a shot at match play and really haven't played a complete round yet," head coach Bart Barnes said. "We've played some good nines and everyone has chipped in here and there. Tomorrow is going to be exciting, and I'm looking forward for a big day out of our young crew."
Calum Masters maintained his steady play with a 2-over 73 to sit tied for 12th place overall. He made the turn even and jetted to 2-under with birdies on No. 10 and No. 11. However, he ended his round with four bogeys over his final seven holes to set his card at 2-over.
Troy has kept itself in the hunt for match play with its success on the par 4 holes. The Trojans lead the field by nine shots with a collective 10-over for the tournament. On the flip side of that, Troy is tied for last in the field with an 11-over on the par 5s. Additionally, Troy is second with 110 pars.
"It was important for us to hold that sixth spot in the leaderboard so we could get out first and start on the front of the course," Barnes said. "We just need to go out and post a number and not worry about what is going on around us."
Dean Martin carded three birdies but fell victim to a pair of double-bogeys in a round of 3-over as he is tied for 16th place overall. Mac Murphy sits in a tie for 39th place after shooting 77 on the day with a pair of birdies, while Ike Alexander is tied for 53rd after his second round of 78 at the Sun Belt Championship.
Troy will play Tuesday's final round with the two teams its chasing in ULM and UT Arlington. The first group will hit the course at 7:30 a.m. on the first tee box.
