MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – Troy shot its best round of the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship with a 7-over 291 in Tuesday's final round, but it wasn't enough to qualify the Trojans for match play as they maintained their spot on the leaderboard and finished in sixth place at the Raven Golf Course.
The Trojans entered the round just three shots back of qualifying for match play and started the round strong with four birdies over the first two holes, including three on No. 1. However, Troy struggled to find many more red numbers as the Trojans added just eight birdies the rest of the way and finished eight shots off the cut line.
Freshman Connor Futrell led Troy as he tied for 14th place after finishing his initial Sun Belt Championship at 3-over. He carded three of Troy's 12 birdies in Tuesday's final round and shot even-par 71 on the day.
Junior Dean Martin had a steady week as he tied for 21st place with a 7-over 220 after his second round of 73 in the tournament. Martin had a flurry of activity on the front nine with three birdies and four bogeys before five pars after the turn. He ended with two more bogeys and a birdie.
Coastal Carolina, UT Arlington, Georgia Southern and South Alabama all qualified for match play to decide the league champion. Coastal Carolina and South Alabama will meet in one semifinal match while UTA and Georgia Southern will meet in the other Wednesday morning; the winners will play Wednesday afternoon. Coastal's Morgan Deneen won the individual title by seven shots with a 10-under 203.
Troy led the field with a combined 19-over on the par 4 holes throughout the week and finished third with 165 pars. The Trojans' struggles came on birdie opportunities as they finished last in the field with just 33.
Calum Masters slipped into a tie for 30th place with a 6-over 77 to close out the week. He was 1-under after four holes, made the turn at 1-over and hit a rough patch on the back of the course. Mac Murphy raced out to 2-under through four holes and added another birdie on the par-3 16th. The Troy freshman tied for 39th after shooting 2-over on Tuesday, while Ike Alexander shot 3-over on the day with one birdie and finished 54th overall.
