TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's golf team returns to a course where it's had a great deal of success in recent years for the Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship. Play opens Sunday at the Raven Golf Course at the Sandestin Resort and continues through Wednesday with both stroke and match play to decide the champion.
The Trojans won the Sun Belt Preview and Sun Belt title during the 2016 season at The Raven and then won the stroke play portion of the Sun Belt Championship last season on the course. Teams will play 54 holes of stroke play on Sunday through Tuesday with the top four teams advancing to match play on Wednesday in a semifinal and final format.
The faces have changed for Troy as only Calum Masters has played the course among the Trojans who will make up head coach Bart Barnes' lineup for the this year's championship event. Masters has had tremendous success on the course as he tied for first as a freshman in 2016 and tied for sixth last season with a combined 1-under par over the six rounds on the course.
"Calum is a leader on this team and someone we are going to lean on," Barnes said. "He and I both have seen what it is like to play well on this course and our leadership is going to have build some confidence out there this week."
Masters leads Troy with a +2.78 score vs. par and 74.44 stroke average this season with two of his last nine rounds coming in under par. Freshman Connor Futrell and junior Dean Martin are not too far behind Masters with marks of +3.21 and +3.63 to par, respectively. Futrell leads Troy with four rounds under par on the season, while Martin's score has counted on the team card a team-best 95.8 percent of the time this season.
Barnes will turn to two more freshmen to fill out his lineup as Ike Alexander and Mac Murphy will get the call. Alexander carries a +4.11 score vs. par, while Murphy sits at +6.20 heading into the Sun Belt Championship. Both are playing better in the spring compared to their fall numbers with Murphy's spring stroke average an impressive 5.55 shots better.
"We've shown the ability to make a bunch of birdies all year," Barnes said. "We have to pay close attention to detail on the harder holes to grind out some tough pars. So, when we get to the par 5s and the shorter par 4s where birdies are out there we're not covering up mistakes. We've got to show some toughness and grit when we're faced with tough situations and stay away from large numbers."
