PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – Troy will seek up to pick up the program's second Sun Belt title in four years and first since 2015 as the Sun Belt Tournament kicks off on Friday at 2 p.m. (CT) against Georgia Southern.
The Trojans (12-10) enter the tournament as the fourth seed and will take on the fifth-seeded Eagles (13-12). A win in the opening round would send Troy to the semifinals to take on the winner of No. 1 Georgia State and No. 8 Coastal Carolina.
Tomorrow's showdown will be a test of two teams that have been at their best in the second half of the season. Troy started dual season 0-4 but rallied to finish 12-10 behind a 10-4 record since the start of March.
That streak included a 4-1 win against Georgia Southern on the road on March 27. With the win, the Trojans snapped a stretch that saw the Eagles go 10-1 leading into the match.
After falling to rival South Alabama on March 10, Troy went 7-2 to close out the regular season. In those wins, the Trojans did not allow the opposition to register more than one point with three shutout wins in that span.
Troy's rally from the slow start to the season is more remarkable considering there are only two upperclassmen on a roster with six freshman. No freshman has put together a better campaign this season than Pelayo Antuña after he was announced as the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year on Wednesday.
In his first season at Troy, Antuña led the Trojans in the regular season with 13 singles wins and an overall record of 13-11 and 10-6 in dual play. He narrowly edged out senior Andy Lau, who capped off his final regular season with 12 singles wins.
Lau combined with Amer Bedwan to be Troy's strongest doubles pair with a blistering record of 11-1 and together. That duo will be needed again as they won their doubles point 7-6 against the Eagles in the previous matchup while Antuña and Jiaqi Duan narrowly won 7-5 to take the doubles point.
The Sun Belt will have live radio broadcasts of each match as well as live stats. For more information on Troy men's tennis, visit TroyTrojans.com.
