Troy Cruises Past Mississippi Valley State

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi – A second quarter surge carried Troy to a 75-54 win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday in Reed Green Coliseum.
After the Devilettes scored the opening basket of the second quarter, Troy (5-1) scored 23 of the next 27 points scampering to a 38-27 advantage. The Trojans allowed just four field goals in the frame and took a 44-33 into the locker room.
Japonica James topped her career-high of 16 points set on Friday against Sam Houston State with a new personal best scoring 17 on Saturday and finished one rebound shy of a double-double.
The Trojans held MVSU (2-5) to just 23.5 percent (7-27) shooting in the second half and outscored the Devilettes 21-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away with the team's fifth straight win.
Four Trojans finished in double figures and six scored at least nine led by James. Amber Rivers added 15 points and five rebounds, while Shaterrika O'Neal and Sky'Lynn Holmes finished with 10 points each. Kayla Robinson had nine points to go along with seven assists and five rebounds.
Troy hauled in a season-best 54 rebounds including 23 offensive boards leading to 19 second chance points. The win matched the Trojans' best start under seventh-year head coach Chanda Rigby.
LaKendra Bassett and Kristy Parker scored 17 each for Mississippi Valley State. Both teams shot under 40 percent, but the Trojans benefited from 25 MVSU turnovers. Troy turned it over just 10 times.
