TROY, Alabama – Troy, the defending Sun Belt Conference women's golf champions, opens its season this weekend at the USA Invitational hosted by South Alabama at the Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course.
In addition to the tournament marking the start of the 2017-18 season, it is also the debut of Randy Keck for the Trojans, who was introduced as Troy's new head coach on Sept. 7.
Troy will feature a new look to its lineup as the Trojans lost three seniors, including four-time All-Sun Belt First Team selection Fátima Fernández Cano, from their core group that won three of the last four Sun Belt Conference titles.
"I've been able to tell pretty quickly that their work ethic is really good," Keck said. "I like their intensity level and their focus on the course. We make a lot of mistakes that look a lot like a young team, but they look like they know how to compete. I'm looking forward to watching them play this weekend to see how they compete in a tournament."
Junior Bianca Lohbauer, a two-time All-Sun Belt selection, posted the fourth-lowest stroke average in Troy history last season with a 75.35 mark over 31 rounds. She finished the year strong as she played her spring rounds to a card of 74.89.
Also back for the Trojans are juniors Lindsey Harrison and Bria Jansen. Harrison played her best golf of the year down the stretch last season as she finished 27th at the Sun Belt Championship and 37th at the Brickyard Collegiate, while Jansen appeared in five events and played 16 rounds.
"We're looking to see who are leaders are and what our identity looks like," Keck said. "Bianca has had a lot of success in the past and has stepped into a leadership role, and some of our other older players are stepping into that as well. It's fun to see players that haven't been leaders before have to step to the forefront and lead."
Keck will turn to a pair of newcomers to fill the other two spots in his opening-day lineup with freshman Eva Fabricius-Bjerre and junior-transfer Sarah Harrison getting the call. Returning juniors Abby Parks and Antonia Poate will play as individuals.
