TROY, Ala. – The Troy soccer team tied the game in the 54th minute but conceded in the 78th to drop a 2-1 result to Murray State on Friday at the Troy Soccer Complex.
The game remained scoreless for the first 51 minutes until the Racers (2-0) found pay dirt off the right foot of Miyah Watford. Cori Cain set up the score by lobbing a pass from midfield over the Trojan back line. Watford then headed down the ball and drove it home from eight yards away.
Troy (1-3) answered quickly when Haley Roberson drove a left-footed cross that was meet by Julia Winter, who's headed shot sailed over the keeper and into the net for the sophomore's second goal in as many games. Roberson now has three assists in the last two games.
In the 78th minute, Murray State keeper Alex Steigerwald punted the ball past the midfield line where Emma Heise headed it directly to a streaking Harriet Withers who scored the game-winner uncontested.
QUOTABLE
"We wanted to posses the ball better than we did," Troy head coach Ged O'Connor said. "In fairness to Murray State, they did a good job of shutting us down. We made some adjustments in eh second half and thought we looked a lot better."
