TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's golf team begins its Sun Belt Conference title defense Sunday at the Raven Golf Course in Miramar Beach, Fla., as the Sun Belt Championship opens with 36 holes of stroke play.
Troy won the 2016 Sun Belt title, its first league championship since 1997, with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Georgia State in match play. The Sun Belt will once again utilize match play to determine its champion and automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals. Following Sunday's opening two rounds, teams will play 18 holes on Monday and the top four teams will advance to match play on Tuesday.
"If we make it through everything, we are going to play a ton of golf in three days," Troy head coach Matt Terry said. "The Raven is a course that we feel very comfortable on and it sets up well for us, but there is not a distinct advantage for any team. It is a course that you feel like you should go low on, but it has just enough teeth in it to even yourself out."
Troy enters the Sun Belt Championship as the second seed among the field of 12 teams with a No. 64 national ranking, while Georgia Southern enters as the 59th-ranked team nationally and Georgia State at No. 68 in the national rankings.
The Trojans have not played a stroke play event since an eight-place finish at the highly-competitive Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt on March 31-April 2. However, Troy knocked off No. 24 Georgia and No. 35 North Florida in match play on April 14.
"Match play is a neat deal and it is totally different than stroke play," Terry said. "It just adds an element that you don't get to see that much and you get to see the guys' big-time competitive side come out."
Terry's lineup will feature four seniors that all have stroke averages at 73.07 or below and all within a stroke and a half of par on the season; all five Trojans in the lineup for the Sun Belt Championship have spring stroke averages at 73.4 or lower.
Clayton Vannoy leads the group with a 72.33 stroke average for the season and a +0.67 score vs. par. He's turned in three top-10 finishes and is tied for the team lead with six rounds in the 60s. Jared Bettcher is tied with Luke Moser for the best spring on the team with a 72.4 average, while Bettcher leads the club with 11 rounds under par – he will bring a 72.59 season average and +0.93 score vs. par into the Sun Belt Championship.
Cam Norman has nine rounds under par, five in the 60s and a +1.33 score vs. par on the season, while Moser has seven rounds under par and a team-low round of 66 (tied with Vannoy). Moser carries a 73.07 season stroke average and +1.41 score vs. par.
Calum Masters tied for second place during the stroke play portion of last year's Sun Belt Championship with a 3-under 210 on the par-71 course. He enters this year's event with a 74.26 stroke average and +2.59 score vs. par.
Troy will play Sunday's opening two rounds with Georgia Southern and Georgia State; the lead group will hit the course beginning at 8:15 a.m.
