Trojans Drop Contest at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy women's basketball team fell to Texas State, 74-72, on Saturday at Strahan Coliseum.
The Trojans (18-9, 11-5 Sun Belt) had an opportunity to tie or take the lead with 4.4 seconds remaining after Texas State (16-11, 11-5) missed a pair of free throws, but were unable to get a shot off before the horn.
Despite shooting just 18 percent (3-17) from the field and turning the ball over six times in the opening quarter, the Trojans led by three, 14-11. Turnovers and extended field goal droughts plagued Troy in the first half. Texas State forced 18 turnovers over the first 20 minutes and built a 10-point lead after the Trojans failed to make a basket for a four-minute stretch in the second quarter.
Troy opened the second half on a 19-6 run to pull ahead, 46-41. That lead was short-lived, however as Texas State battled back to take a 55-50 advantage before Amanda Mendoza was fouled just before the horn and converted all three free throws to close the gap to two.
Claresa Banks gave the Trojans 68-65 lead with a 3-pointer at the 3:21 mark in the fourth but the Bobcats came roaring back with an 8-0 run to put themselves ahead for good. Troy pulled within two points on a jumper by ArJae' Saunders with two seconds remaining. The Trojans failed to get a shot off after Texas State missed two ensuing free throws.
Caitlyn Ramirez recorded her 12th career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, she also had six steals. Saunders posted 16 points while Mendoza added 14. Troy shot 37.7 percent for the game while Texas State converted 42.9 percent of its shots.
UP NEXT
Troy returns home for the final two games of the regular season. The Trojans host Arkansas State on March 2 and Little Rock on March 4.

• Troy was 20-for-22 (90.9 percent) from the free throw line in the game; the percentage was the highest since shooting the same (10-11, 90.9) against Arkansas State last season.
• The Trojans out-rebounded Texas State 48-31.
