Hartley and Gray Power Trojans Past Wildcats

BOCA RATON, Florida - The Trojans completed their opening weekend for the 2017 season at the FAU "Kick-Off" Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., with a 9-6 win against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. Two three-run home runs by Becca Hartley and Jordan Gray sealed the win for Troy (3-2).
Rachel Rigney got her second start in the circle and pitched six innings, while Claire Graves came in for one. Graves got shaken up on a play that allowed Rigney to re-enter. With this win, Rigney now moves to 2-1 on the season.
After two innings of defensive pressure from both teams, senior Jordan Gray got on base with a double that almost cleared the left field wall. Fly balls from Carli Kayler and Hartley drove Gray home to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Bethune-Cookman got on base in the fourth inning with a bunt, and an RBI single tied the game at 1-1. In the fifth inning, the Wildcats took a 4-1 lead starting the inning off with a double to center field. A fly ball advanced the runner to third and a single to left field allowed the runner to score and put Wildcats on second and third. A bunt and a stolen base brought in two more runs before the Trojans were able to get out of the inning.
Down 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Troy stepped up to the plate. Logan Calhoun reached base on an error and catcher Kaylee Hussey got hit by a pitch to out runners on first and second. Gray reached base on an error, and Calhoun scored. Freshman Brooke Echols came in to pinch run for Gray and advanced to third on a base hit from Carli Kayler, while Hussey was able to score.
With no outs and two runners on base, momentum was on the Trojans' side. Hartley stepped up to the plate and blasted a three-run homer to put Troy up 6-4. That was Hartley's second of the tournament as she also hit a home run in the first game against the Wildcats on Feb. 10.
Troy was able to hold the Wildcats to one run in the sixth inning. The Trojans stepped back up to the plate. Logan Calhoun got on base with a fielder's choice and stole second. Another walked batter brought up Gray. On a 2-1 count, Gray smashed her first home run of her career scoring three runs to give the Trojans a 9-5 lead.
A few more hits in the seventh for Bethune-Cookman brought in one more run for the Wildcats, but the Trojan defense got the last out of the game catching a runner trying to steal third.
NOTEWORTHY
• With her two home runs in this tournament, Hartley now has 25 career homers, which is third in the Troy record books.
• Hartley recorded a hit in each of the five games during the FAU Tournament.
• Katie Webb and Kaylee Hussy each recorded three multi-hit games during the tournament.
• Gray and Hartley each recorded a team-high four RBIs against the Wildcats
•Troy is now 4-0 all time against Bethune Cookman
QUOTABLE
"I thought we really had to gut it out today on the mound," head coach Beth Mullins said. "The offense did a good job of having quality at bats and consistently putting runs on the board. Two of our seniors, Jordan Gray and Becca Hartley, came up with two very timely hits to help us come out on top today. Now we are going to return home and get better for our next tournament at the Troy Softball Classic."
"I just told myself to trust my training and let God take it from there," said Jordan Gray. "I stepped in the box looking to the middle and when my pitch was there I went for it and got a double. For the homerun, I had a similar approach. I just waiting for my pitch to drive and when it was there I took the barrel to the ball. I was so excited to be able to contribute to a solid team win."
UP NEXT
The Trojans return home to host two back-to-back weekend tournaments. The first tournament will feature games against Jacksonville, Longwood and Samford, while the second tournament Troy will host Lipscomb, Southeastern Louisiana and Pittsburgh.
