Troy Tripped up by Samford
12/22/2017 4:04:00 PM | Basketball (W)
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – For the second time in a week, Samford battled back from a double-digit deficit to upend the Troy, this time, 80-76, in Fogelman Arena in the Tulane Classic.
The Bulldogs (7-7) erased a 16-point deficit outscoring the Trojans 59-40 in the second half and overtime. It was an eerily similar occurrence to the one on Dec. 17 when Samford dug out of a 21-point hole to beat Troy 80-73.
It was a tale of two halves for Troy (5-6), who shot 50 percent in the second quarter and held the Bulldogs to just 23 first half points. Amber Rivers was one of the few bright spots for the Trojans scoring 18 points with 12 coming over the final 25 minutes.
Trailing 42-26 early in the third quarter, Samford outscored Troy 23-9 to close out the frame and held the Trojans to just two field goals over the span. The Trojans built the lead back out to seven with 7:40 remaining in the game, but the Bulldogs made six of their last nine shots to draw level and force overtime.
Jasmine Sanders was the only other Trojan to score in double-figures with 11 points and was 3-for-3 from 3-point range. After being held to just three points from most of the game, Samford leading scorer Hannah Nichols exploded down the stretch finishing with a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
UP NEXT
Troy will have a few days off before returning to action on Dec. 29 to kick off conference play against Georgia Southern at Trojan Arena.
NOTEWORTHY
• Troy has lost four straight non-conference games for the first time since 2011-12.
• The game marked just the second overtime game for the Trojan over the last two seasons and only the eighth since Chanda Rigby's arrival in 2012.
