Troy Hosts Georgia Southern to Open Sun Belt Play

TROY, Alabama – Troy opens league play as back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Tournament champions but also looking to snap a four-game skid as the Trojans host Georgia Southern on Friday at 5 p.m. in Trojan Arena.

The Trojans (5-6) fell in overtime to Samford, 82-76, in the Tulane Classic on Dec. 22 and have not won since Dec. 9 against Montevallo. Amber Rivers looks to keep her solid season going as she enters the game averaging a team-best 12.4 points and is second in league shooting 51.5 percent from the field.

Georgia Southern (3-8) is also trying to right the ship having dropped five straight. Nine of the 14 players on the Eagles' roster are either sophomores or freshmen. Sophomore Nakol Franks is averaging 8.6 points per game while senior Sierra Butler paces the squad with 8.3 rebounds per contest.

Georgia Southern (3-8) has lost five straight and is coming off a 68-49 loss to Stony Brook in its final non-conference contest on Dec. 21. Stony Brook hit eight three-pointers and scored 26 points off turnovers en route to the victory. Heading into conference play, Georgia Southern is in familiar territory. At this point last season, the Eagles were 4-8 before putting together a 9-9 mark in Sun Belt play finishing sixth in the league standings.
