TROY, Alabama – Troy arguably played its most complete game of the season in an 88-47 win over Georgia Southern to open Sun Belt Conference play on Friday in Trojan Arena.
The 47 points allowed were the fewest allowed by a Troy team since South Alabama managed only 41 on Jan. 26, 2011, it was also the largest margin of victory (41) in a Sun Belt Conference game in school history. The Trojans held Georgia Southern to just 22.9 percent (16-of-70) from the field in the game, while the Trojans shot 39.2 percent (31-79).
Troy (6-6, 1-0 Sun Belt) opened with a bang as Harriet Winchester hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the team's first points of the game, they were two of Troy's 11 treys on the night. A pedestrian first quarter gave way to a wide open final three periods. The Trojans opened the second on a 6-0 run and blocked five shots in the frame and finished with eight in the contest.
Amber Rivers scored a game-high 20 points, her second 20-point performance of the season and fourth consecutive game in double figures. Four of the Trojan's starting five finished in double digits including Kayla Robinson, who turned in 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
The Eagles (3-9, 0-1) were just 2-of-15 from the field in the third period allowing Troy to pull away and lead by as many 43 points in the second half.
QUOTABLE
"It certainly feels good to start 1-0 and I can see us getting better on some specific things we've been working on, so that feels good as well," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "We've been shooting a lot in practice and it really paid off today."
