Troy Hosts AUM in Exhibition
10/31/2017 12:49:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – The back-to-back Sun Belt Conference champion Troy women's basketball team hosts AUM in an exhibition on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Trojan Arena. Admission is FREE.
The team returns to action for the first time since taking on Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last March. The Trojans return just one starter in senior Amanda Mendoza, but have restocked the roster with a mix of transfers and elite high school talent.
One newcomer coaches are hoping will make an immediate impact is Marquette transplant Chelsey Gibson. The 6-foot sophomore from Pensacola, Fla., was ranked top 25 among junior college players out of Gulf Coast State College where she averaged 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game as a sophomore and earned WBCA Junior College All-American Honors.
Troy and AUM have not met on the hardwood since 1992 when the Trojans were in transition to become NCAA Division I.

NOTEWORTHY
• Troy is in the midst of arguably the most successful stretch in program history. The Trojans have won at least 20 games in each of the last three years and have claimed the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title in back-to-back seasons. Troy finished 22-11 last year, one win shy of tying the program's all-time record set in 1996-97.
• For the fifth straight season, Chanda Rigby's fast-paced offense led the Sun Belt in scoring as the Trojans averaged 82.5 points per game, an average that ranked seventh in the NCAA. In five seasons under Rigby, the Trojans have now scored 80-plus points in 73 games.
• Rigby's style also features a pressure defense that forced opponents into 21.0 turnovers per game last season, second-best in the Sun Belt. The Trojans ranked 38th in the nation and second in the conference with 9.9 steals per game. In Rigby's five seasons, Troy has forced 83 opponents into 20-plus turnovers and 17 into 30-plus turnovers.
• Troy continued its success even after the graduation of three-time All-Sun Belt honoree Ashley Beverly Kelley in 2016. Now, the Trojans will need to fill the void left by two-time All-Sun Belt selection Caitlyn Ramirez. With Ramirez anchoring the post, Troy led the nation in offensive rebounds, was second in total rebounds and sixth in defensive rebounds.
