KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Paced by a pair of under-par rounds from Clayton Vannoy, the Troy men's golf team shot a combined 3-over in the first two rounds of the season-opening Invitational at The Ocean Course on Monday at the Kiawah Island Resort; the Trojans are tied for 10th place overall.
Vannoy carded five birdies in each of his two rounds on Monday en route to firing rounds of 70 and 71, respectively, on the par-72 course. Vannoy will enter Tuesday's final round tied for 14th place overall, just one shot out of sixth place.
The Trojans were strong on the par 5s as they finished third in the field on the opening day with a combined 13-under par. However, Troy struggled on the par 3s as the five Trojan golfers combined to shoot 9-over on the day. The Trojans carded 31 birdies over the opening 36 holes of play, but had a pair of triple-bogeys and a quad on the day.
Luke Moser torched the course the first trip through as he sank five birdies around one bogey to finish the round at 4-under. However, his second round wasn't as clean with five bogeys and a double-bogey around three birdies. Moser shot 4-over in the second round and is tied for 36th place at even par through the two rounds.
Jared Bettcher and Cam Norman both shot a pair of 74s and sit tied for 58th place, while Calum Masters is tied for 79th place at 9-over par.
Middle Tennessee leads Georgia State by three strokes at the top of the leaderboard, while Augusta's Jake Marriott and Georgia State's Alex Merrmann are tied for the individual lead at 10-under.
Troy will be paired with Augusta, South Alabama and Georgia Southern for Tuesday's final round. The foursome will hit the course beginning at 6:30 a.m. (CDT).
