5/25/2016 1:51:00 PM | Track & Field
JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The Troy outdoor track and field team is set to compete in the NCAA East Preliminaries, which begins on Thursday and ends on Saturday.
Â
The Trojans are sending seven athletes competing in five events, after only sending on athlete to compete in one event last year. Corina Cox was the lone Trojan to compete in the East Prelims last season. Troy is also sending an alternate athlete in the 4x100-meter event in Myles Charley.
Â
"I am anxious to see how we compete over the next few days," Marc Davis said. "Right now, they are ready to compete well. They just have to be able to focus on their own performances. They will be surrounded by the best athletes in the country. The eight athletes we brought have to realize they are eight of the best athletes in the country in their respective events. Honestly, all of them have a very good shot to get to the next round. However, they have to believe in themselves and have no fear to get there."
Â
The Trojans have two different athletes qualifying for two different events with Zach Douglas qualifying in shot put and discus. Hakim Montgomery, Benjamin Martin both qualified for the 100-meter sprints and are a part of the men's 4x100-meter relays. Corina Cox and Jaevyn Wortham both qualified for the discus competition.
Â
Montgomery and Martin will be the first to compete on Thursday in the 100-meter sprints, which begins at 6:30 p.m. They achieved times at the Sun Belt Conference Championships that qualified them for the preliminaries in the 100-meter race. Montgomery finished with a 10.30 time, while Martin finished with a 10.31 time.
Â
The men discus on Friday at 4 p.m., which will feature Douglas, who's 55.39-meter discus throw qualified him. Before that is the women discus at noon on Friday. It features Cox, who finished with a 56.04-meter at the Alabama Relays and Wortham, who finished with a 51.96-meter toss at the Jaguar Opener.
Â
Following that is the men 4x100-meter relay, which features Montgomery, Martin Cameron Rice, Garrison Floyd and Charley as the alternate. They finished with a 40.10 time at the conference tournament. That is set for the final day, Saturday, at 6:15 p.m.
Â
