TROY, Alabama – Coming off one of the top tournament victories in the program's Division I history, the No. 51 Troy men's golf team faces another loaded field at the Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State at the Southwood Golf Club this weekend.
Troy stunned the collegiate golf world earlier this week when it won the Tiger Invitational, which was hosted by No. 5 Auburn, who moved up to No. 3 in this week's rankings despite the loss to Troy. The victory was Troy's second of the year and also included a 30-stroke win over No. 25 Kentucky.
The Trojans received contributions from up and down their lineup in the win, as No. 5 player and freshman Calum Masters tied for sixth place in the event after shooting a 6-under 66 in the final round, while No. 4 player Cam Norman tied for eighth after shooting a 4-under in Tuesday's final round.
Luke Moser and Jared Bettcher continue to be separated by just one overall stroke at the top of the Troy leaderboard. Bettcher led Moser by one stroke heading to the Tiger Invitational, but the two flip flopped their position following the event.
Moser leads the Trojans with a 72.90 stroke average, eight rounds under par and four rounds in the 60s, while Bettcher is second with a 72.95 stroke average and is the lone Trojan to have all 20 of his rounds count towards the team card.
Clayton Vannoy is not too far behind the duo as he checks in with a 73.25 stroke average and he has a 72.33 average so far through six rounds in the spring. Vannoy is second on the team with seven rounds under par and is tied with Bettcher for the team lead with three top-10 finishes.
Norman lowered his average to 74.35 for the year with his performance at the Tiger Invitational and he ranks third on the team with five rounds under par this year. Masters, whose 66 was one shot off a school record, carries a 76.40 stroke average into the Seminole Intercollegiate.
The Trojans have catapulted up the national rankings since the start of the spring season. Troy finished the fall ranked No. 80 in the country by Golfstat, but have since jumped 29 spots after the first two tournaments following the break.
Troy will have another opportunity to make some national noise this week as No. 3 Auburn, No. 4 Florida State, No. 23 Penn State and No. 48 Louisville are all in the field in addition to No. 53 Jacksonville, No. 59 East Tennessee State, No. 67 James Madison, No. 72 Ole Miss and No. 75 VCU. The rest of the field includes Illinois State, Mercer, Penn and West Virginia.
Troy, Penn State and Louisville will be in the final grouping off No. 1 and they will tee off beginning at 9:10 a.m. (CST).
