BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Troy's men's and women's track and field teams took down several Sun Belt Conference foes in both team and individual scoring yesterday at the Jaguar Invitational hosted by South Alabama within the Birmingham CrossPlex facility.
Led by noteworthy performances from the underclassmen amid a small travel squad, the Trojan women outscored UL Lafayette and ULM, while the men eclipsed Little Rock.
"We did many things well this weekend – there were a lot of personal bests and big highlights of the season," head coach Marc Davis said. "As a team, we have to learn how to compete better in scoring situations. It's great to beat conference opponents; however, in order to be where I believe this team can be, we have to step it up over the next two weeks. The future is very bright for this young team and they are still learning how to handle these high-pressure situations."
In the women's 400-meter dash, sophomore Niata Alexander stormed to second place in a season's-best time of 56.17 seconds, while junior Dallas Worthy followed up in third in 57.13 seconds. Worthy also contributed a leg to Troy's 4x400-meter relay, which took seventh out of 16 teams and outpaced conference foes UL Lafayette, Arkansas State, Georgia State and ULM.
During a tightly contested race, freshman standout Tyson Robinson found himself in the mix to win the 800-meter run as he charged off the final turn among a pack of four competitors, but took third as South Alabama's Christoph Graf out-leaned him and Southeastern Louisiana's Alex Holden for first. The top four runners finished within a tenth of a second of each other, with a mere hundredth of a second separating Robinson (1:54.246) from Holden (1:54.245).
Against a stacked field, junior Cameron Rice continued to improve his best indoor 400-meter dash mark and crossed the line in 49.45 seconds for sixth place. He also found success in the 200-meter dash, where he ran another personal-best indoor time and finished seventh in 21.87 seconds. Senior Chaun Lynn also broke the 50-second barrier by running to a season's-best time of 49.71 seconds for eighth place.
Sophomore Garrison Floyd also had breakthrough performances – he took third in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.12 seconds and recorded his farthest leap ever, 6.87 meters (22'6.5"), in the long jump. His classmate, Sydney Wright, continued to improve upon her season's best mark in the 60-meter dash by racing through the line in 7.64 seconds – just a hundredth of a second off her lifetime best. That time qualified her for finals, where she placed seventh. In the men's 60-meter dash, freshman Hakim Montgomery qualified for finals for the third consecutive meet this season and took sixth overall in 6.86 seconds.
In the field events, junior Zach Douglas repeated as runner-up for the second consecutive meet in the shot put with a throw of 17.40 meters (57'1"), which is now his personal-best indoor mark. Senior Myles Charley took sixth in the triple jump while freshman Indiya Summerville also earned sixth in the shot put.
The Trojan women will travel to the Birmingham CrossPlex again for the Samford Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
