Women’s Track & Field Heads to Birmingham for Samford Invitational
2/11/2016 2:17:00 PM | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Troy's women's track and field team will return to the Birmingham CrossPlex this weekend to compete at the Samford Invitational on Friday and Sunday. Friday's action will begin with the men's high jump and weight throw on the infield and the women's 200-meter dash at 8 p.m.
"We're using this weekend as an opportunity to sharpen up the people who are healthy while resting the people on our team who could use extra recovery," head coach Marc Davis said. "This is the women's final chance to compete before the Sun Belt Indoor Conference meet, so we want to present a unified effort, establish strong marks and focus on bringing a competitive edge to every single event."
Last weekend, the Trojans got a taste of Sun Belt Conference action at the South Alabama-hosted Jaguar Invitational, where the underclassmen led the team in outstanding performances. Sophomore Sydney Wright, who ran within a hundredth of a second of her fastest-ever 60-meter dash last weekend, will return to the track on Friday for the women's 200-meter dash. She will be joined by junior Dallas Worthy, who took third in the Jaguar Invitational's 400-meter dash.
In the field events, freshman Indiya Summerville will look to continue her successful year after earning several personal-best marks and top-ten finishes in the shot put. Sophomore pole vaulter Carissa Madson will also strive to improve on her new personal best height of 3.5 meters (11'5.75"), which she eclipsed by nearly five inches last weekend.
The women's distance crew is also preparing for season's-best performances in the mile from freshman Krystin Guirey, junior Keaton Wallace and sophomore Sara Zylstra, who will also compete in the 3,000-meter run with juniors Samantha Smith and Katrina Bokenfohr.
Next week, the Trojan women will travel to the Birmingham CrossPlex for the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championship meet from Monday, Feb. 22 to Tuesday, Feb. 23.
