Troy Men’s Tennis Plays Six Tiebreakers in Loss at No. 63 Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The Troy men's tennis team and No. 63 Alabama played an incredible six tiebreakers in singles play, but Troy came out on the short end of a 5-2 decision at the Robert Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility on Sunday afternoon.
Troy (1-8) played its eighth match against a ranked team this season, and after Alabama won the doubles point, singles play was very closely contested. Four of six first sets went to a tiebreaker, but the Crimson Tide (6-3) won three of them to take control.
Pablo Moreno tied the match, 1-1, as the Troy junior cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Danny Kerznerman at No. 5 singles. Alabama, however, got a win from one of its three ranked players as No. 66 Mazen Osama beat Vaclav Slezak at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1.
No. 106 Korey Lovett then put Alabama up 3-1 with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Troy's Andy Lau at No. 4 in the first match to finish after a first-set tiebreaker.
Daniel Bustamante kept the Trojans alive with his second ranked win in as many weeks, winning at No. 2 singles over No. 123 Becker O'Shaugnessey, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Troy needed to win both of the remaining matches, and both went to second-set tiebreakers after doing the same in the first set. However, Alabama won both to take the 5-2 decision. Troy's Giovani Samaha fell at No. 3 to Grayson Goldin, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2), while Tomas Fernandez fell to Nikko Madregallejo at No. 6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6).
Troy returns to the court next weekend with a Friday match at Winthrop and a Saturday contest at No. 32 NC State.
