Troy Blanks New Orleans to Win Second Straight
2/26/2016 6:39:00 PM | Tennis (M)
NEW ORLEANS – The Troy men's tennis team won its second straight match on the road, shutting out the New Orleans Privateers, 7-0, at the University Tennis Center.
Troy (3-9) cruised to the doubles win as Pablo Moreno and Andy Lau won at No. 1, 6-2, and Giovani Samaha and Mustapha Belcora won, 6-3, at No. 2.
The Trojans then quickly took care of New Orleans (3-1) in singles play, winning all six matches, including five in straight sets.
Belcora was the first to finish, beating Nicolas Kramer at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2. Moreno wasn't far behind with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Giacomo Adoncecchi at No. 2. Lau clinched the match for Troy with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Gonzalo Garcia at No. 4.
Samaha played at No. 1 singles for the first time this season and quickly won over Jeffrey Hsu, 6-3, 6-3. Francisco Yim Kim was the lone Trojan to go past a second set as he won at No. 5 over Luis Albuquerque, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).
However, perhaps the best sign of the day for Troy came in the last match at No. 6 singles. That is where Hassan Ndayishimiye, Troy's top returner from last season's Sun Belt championship team, won over Karim Shokeir, 6-3, 7-6 (5). It was just the second competitive, collegiate match of the season for the junior who has battled injury all season.
Troy now turns its attention to next Friday when Chattanooga visits the Lunsford Tennis Complex for Troy's home opener. The Trojans will also travel to Statesboro, Ga., to take on Georgia Southern and Florida gulf Coast next Saturday.
