Troy Set to Host UAB, Brown Wins College Sports Madness Conference Pitcher of the Week
2/23/2016 4:29:00 PM | Baseball
TROY, Alabama – Fresh off an opening weekend four-game sweep, the Troy baseball team looks ahead to its first midweek game of the 2016 season against UAB on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field.
Troy (4-0) completed its first opening weekend sweep since 2013 in large part to Lucas Brown, who pitched eight shutout innings on Saturday and earned CollegeSportsMadness.com Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week, announced on Tuesday.
"Lucas was outstanding in his first start," Mark Smartt said. "He commanded three pitches and was very efficient. I expected him to throw well, but the fact that he worked 8.0 innings with his pitch count as low as it was, was more than anyone could have imagined. He is in position to have an excellent senior season."
Offensively, the Trojans are lead by Joey Denison, who is batting .500 with two doubles and two RBIs. Reid Long, Brandon Lockridge and Matt Sanders lead the team with four runs driven in, while Long and Lockridge have a team-high one home run apiece.
Freshman Zack Lightsey gets the midweek start for the Trojans, making the first start of his collegiate career. Lightsey saw action coming out of the bullpen against Northern Kentucky. He pitched 0.2 innings, allowed one earned run, walked two and struck out two.
UAB (1-2) lost the opening series to Arkansas State in Birmingham. Griffin Gum leads the Blazers on offense, with a .455 batting average, two doubles and three RBIs. Gum also has a .636 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.
The Blazers will send freshman Garrett Whitlock on the mound against Troy. Whitlock pitched a three up, three down inning against the Red Wolves last weekend and will get his first start of his career.
Troy trails the all-time series with UAB, 23-25. The Blazers defeated the Trojans in Birmingham last season, 7-1. However, Troy holds a 14-8 advantage when facing UAB at Riddle-Pace Field.
Fans wearing a cardinal cap for Wednesday's game will be given free popcorn.
