After winning twice at home last week, Troy (12-12, 7-8) traveled to South Alabama on Tuesday and lost, 65-63, as the Jaguars hit a game-winner with 1.4 seconds left. Troy had possession in a tie game with 16.5 seconds remaining, but turned the ball over for the second time in the final minute.
Â
The Trojans shot just 30.6 percent, their second lowest mark of the season and lowest in Sun Belt play. Troy was just 3-of-18 in the fourth quarter, scoring a season-low 12 points as South Alabama cut into Troy's lead before closing the game on an 8-0 run to win by two points. The loss made Troy 0-5 in games decided by six points or less this season (0-4 in Sun Belt play).
Â
Troy did outrebound South Alabama, 52-43, posting a season-high 52 rebounds for the second straight game after outrebounding Georgia State, 52-37, last Saturday. Caitlyn Ramirez and Kristen Emerson led Troy at South Alabama with 15 and 11 boards, respectively. Emerson had eight offensive rebounds for a Troy team that leads the Sun Belt with 15.8 per game.
Â
ArJae' Saunders led the Trojans in scoring with 17 points at South Alabama. The junior is up to 11.7 points per game on the season and has scored in double figures in nine of her last 11 games, averaging 15.6 per game over that span.
Â
Ashley Beverly Kelley, the Sun Belt's leading scorer at 19.9 points per game, scored just nine at South Alabama, marking only her third game this season without double digits. She now has 1,793 career points, just two away from moving into second place in Troy history. She also sits in 22nd place in the Sun Belt's 34-year history, just three points out of 21st.
Â
Despite the 63 points on Tuesday, Troy is still sixth in the NCAA in scoring at 81.9 points per game. Troy is also sixth in the NCAA in opponent turnovers, forcing 22.4 miscues per game.
Â
Appalachian State (8-16, 5-10) has lost three straight games, including a 68-54 loss at home to South Alabama on Thursday. Like Troy did on Tuesday night at South Alabama, the Mountaineers struggled to shoot the ball against the Jaguars, hitting just 35 percent from the field.
Â
Madi Story and KeKe Cooper led App State with 13 points each, while Cooper added 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
Â
Troy leads the all-time series against Appalachian State, 2-1, but the Mountaineers won this season's first meeting, 96-81, at Trojan Arena in late January. The Mountaineers shot 62 percent in the second half and led nearly the entire game.
Â
Following Saturday's game, Troy returns to Trojan Arena for its final two games. Troy will host UL Lafayette on Thursday and ULM next Saturday on Senior Day.
