Troy Baseball Ready for Season Opener Against Northern Kentucky

TROY, Alabama – The Troy baseball team is set to open its 2016 season with a four-game series against Northern Kentucky beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field.
Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. and Sunday's finale is also slated for a 1 p.m. start. Video of all four games will be streamed LIVE on TroyTrojans.com. Free audio broadcasts will be available all weekend on TroyTrojans.com. Friday's and Sunday's game can be heard at 94.7 WTBF with Saturday's game aired live on WTBF AM970.
Troy enters the 2016 with Mark Smartt at the helm. Smartt was an assistant coach for the Trojans for 14 years and took over the program following the 2015 season.
The Trojans finished last season in second place of the Sun Belt Conference and posted a 30-25 record. Grant Bennett and Lucas Brown return for their senior season as the top two pitchers in the rotation and will toe the rubber in the first two games of the series.
Bennett posted a 3.12 ERA and a 9-4 record last year. The Hazel Green, Ala., native led the team with 106.2 innings pitched and 84 strikeouts. Brown led the team with a 2.85 ERA and finished second on the team with six wins and 60 strikeouts.
Junior college transfer Evan Hebert will get his first start on the mound for the Trojans in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday. Sunday's starting pitcher is still yet to be determined.
Northern Kentucky finished last season with a Division I program best 17 wins, but features 13 newcomers for the 2016 season. The Norse will start two returners on the mound in Justin Watts and Pierce Knisley to go head-to-head against Bennett and Brown, but will have two newcomers close out the series. Freshman Jordan Menfee will get the start for the second game on Saturday and Pat Kelley will start the series finale for the Norse.
Troy and Northern Kentucky met for the opening series in 2014 and the Trojans took 3 out of 4 games from the Norse. Troy holds a 6-2 all-time series lead over Northern Kentucky.
The Trojans are 26-4 on opening weekend since the 2008 season and have won 11 of its last 13 season openers including its last seven season opening contests at home.
