GAINESVILLE, Florida – The Troy soccer team fell just short to No. 8 Florida in an exhibition match on Tuesday night in Gainesville.
Â
The teams played two 30-minute periods followed by one 40-minute period. The Trojans and Gators were tied at the end of the first period, but Alissa Jones gave Troy the lead as she scored the first goal of the match in the 46th minute.
Â
Florida, the preseason pick to win the SEC by the league's coaches, scored later in the second period to tie the game at one a piece heading into the 40-minute third period.
Â
In the 72nd minute Alyssa Howell gave the Gators the game-winning goal to make the final score 2-1.
Â
"I thought we played extremely well against one of the best teams in the country." Troy head coach, Jason Hamilton said. "Alissa Jones picked up right where she left off last year and scored for us. We had great goalkeeping by Mikki Lewis and had nice saves to keep the game where it was. It was definitely a very good test for the players and to get us ready for the season."
Â
The Trojans, who set a school record with 13 shutouts last season, played great defense and sophomore goalkeeper Mikki Lewis tallied six saves on the night.
Â
The Trojans have one more exhibition match at Murray State on Saturday at 1 p.m., before opening up the regular season on August 21, against Garder-Webb at the Troy Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.
