4/7/2015 10:54:00 PM | Softball
HATTIESBURG, Mississippi – The Troy softball team used the long ball to sweep Southern Miss, 4-2 in the first game and 3-1 in the second, in a doubleheader on Tuesday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Â
Troy (24-17) hit four home runs on the night, with none bigger than Michelle Phelps' two-run bomb to left field in the second game, and gave Troy the go-ahead run for a 3-1 win.
Â
Katie Cleary had a hit in each game and one RBI on the night to lead Southern Miss (16-21) offensively.
Â
Troy 4, Southern Miss 2 (Game 1)
Â
Becca Hartley produced three of Troy's four runs as she went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly. Ashley Rainey also had a solo home run to right center field for her sixth home run of the season.
Â
Southern Miss scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning, but Troy battled back and hit back-to-back home runs by Hartley and Rainey in the top of the third to give Troy a 3-1 lead.
Â
The Trojans took a 4-1 lead when Kate Benton scored on a sacrifice fly by Hartley in the fifth inning.
Â
The Golden Eagles cut the lead to two in the sixth inning and threatened to add more, but left the bases loaded due to a Jenifer Gray strikeout from Jaycee Affeldt.
Â
"I think our team showed a lot of fight and did a good job of winning the late innings," head coach Beth Mullins said. "Our pitching staff did a good job and we played great defense behind them. Offensively, we had a couple of timely hits."
Â
Ashley Rainey (9-3) got the win for Troy as she pitched five innings and only allowed two earned runs as she struck out four. Affeldt got her third save of the year as she pitched two innings of no-hit softball.
Â
Troy 3, Southern Miss 1 (Game 2)
Â
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Michelle Phelps blasted a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall in the top of the seventh inning and drove in the winning run.
Â
Hannah Day tied the game at one as she hit her fifth home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning.
Â
Southern Miss scored first in the fifth inning on a Samantha Reynolds single up the middle.
Â
Sara Mock got the start and pitched 5.2 innings and only gave up one run on three hits and struck out three. Affeldt (12-6) got the win for Troy as she pitched 1.1 innings of relief work and struck out two Golden Eagles to reach 100 strikeouts on the year.
Â
Seven different Trojans had hits in the game, as Becca Hartley and Amanda Winters had two each.
Â
Troy will be back in action on Saturday to begin a weekend series in San Marcos, Texas against Sun Belt opponent, Texas State.
