NEW ORLEANS – The top-seeded Troy men's tennis team opens play in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championships on Saturday when its takes on UL Lafayette at 9:45 a.m. at the UNO Tennis Center in New Orleans.
UL Lafayette, the tournament's No. 5 seed, defeated Georgia Southern, the tournament's No. 4 seed, in Friday's first round.
The winner of Saturday's semifinal will advance to Sunday's championship match to face the winner of No. 2 UT Arlington and No. 3 South Alabama. The championship match will be played at 2 p.m. with an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament on the line.
Live stats and live audio for all matches will be available through SunBeltSports.org.
Troy (23-6), ranked No. 60 in the ITA National Team Rankings, is the top seed in the Sun Belt Championships for the first time in program history. The Trojans were last the top seed in a conference tournament in 2005 in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The Trojans have improved by 15 wins over last season's 8-17 team that lost in the first round of the Sun Belt Championships.
A pair of first team All-Sun Belt singles selections lead the Trojans in singles play. Gabriel Dias is 14-5 this season, including a 10-4 mark in the No. 1 position, with seven straight wins to close the regular season. Hassan Ndayishimye is 20-5 this season and is the only Sun Belt player to earn 20 singles wins this spring.
Andy Lau and Giovani Samaha were both named to the All-Sun Belt singles second team. Samaha enters the tournament as the Trojans' hottest player, having won 10 straight matches on his way to a 17-3 record.
UL Lafayette (14-12) lost to Georgia Southern in its regular-season finale, but avenged that loss with Friday's win. The Ragin' Cajuns, the defending Sun Belt champions, were scheduled to play two more matches after the loss to Georgia Southern, but saw both matches against UT Arlington and Southern Miss canceled.
UL Lafayette is the only Sun Belt team Troy didn't face this season. The Trojans posted a perfect 5-0 record in Sun Belt matches while UL Lafayette went 2-1.
