Trojans Fall at Auburn, Look Ahead to Troy Classic

AUBURN, Alabama – The Troy University softball team fell at No. 20/19 Auburn 15-5 Thursday night at Jane B. Moore Field. The Trojans now look ahead to the Troy Classic, which begins Friday.

Troy's (0-1) bats were alive early, plating four runs in the top of the first inning. Hannah Day led off the game with her first career hit, reaching on a single up the middle. Amanda Winters followed with a single to center field, advancing Day to second. Day and Winters then advanced on a wild pitch. Michelle Phelps walked to load the bases and after a strikeout, Becca Hartley drove in the first run of the season on a fielder's choice.

With runners on first and third and two outs, Khadija Neely doubled to right field driving in Winters and Hartley. Neely would score two pitches later on a Heather Johnston single through the left side.

The Trojans were held scoreless until the fifth inning when Phelps scored on a Hartley ground out to second base.

The Tigers (1-0) answered with 10 runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Emily Carosone grand slam over the left center field wall. The Tigers scored in every inning except the fourth.

Senior Jaycee Affeldt (0-1) got the start in the circle for the Trojans and was tagged with the loss.

Troy will play its home opener on Friday in the Troy Classic. The Trojans will face Florida A&M Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Troy leads the series against the Rattlers 43-13. The last time the two teams met was last season at the Troy Softball Complex with Troy winning 4-0. Last season, Florida A&M went 25-29 finishing third in the south division of the MEAC.

Troy will play a doubleheader Saturday when they take on Buffalo at noon and Western Kentucky at 5:30 p.m. Troy will close out the Troy Classic facing the Ospreys of North Florida at noon.
