Troy Hosts Trojan Invitational

TROY, Alabama - The Troy softball team is back in action this weekend as it hosts the Trojan Invitational at the Troy Softball Complex; admission to all Troy softball games is free. Troy opens play with a doubleheader on Friday, beginning with UConn at 3 p.m. and ending with Northern Illinois at 5:30 p.m.

The Trojans will play the reverse order on Saturday as they open with Northern Illinois at 12:30 p.m. and follow with UConn at 3 p.m. Troy will end the tournament against Evansvillle at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Troy (3-6), which enters the invitational coming off a 1-3 weekend at the Georgia Bulldog Invitational, is led offensively by junior Kate Benton's .333 batting average and five stolen bases.

Hannah Day is also swinging a hot bat for the Trojans as she is batting .304 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Ashley Rainey (3-1) leads the Troy pitching staff with a 2.62 ERA and nine strikeouts in 21.1 innings of work.

UConn will begin its season at the Trojan Invitational. The Huskies went 13-38 last season and 3-17 in American Athletic Conference play. UConn won the only other meeting between the two schools back in 2001.

Northern Illinois comes in with a 2-3 record after dropping two to Pittsburgh and one to Texas State last weekend; the Huskies have victories over Sam Houston State and Texas State on the young season. Troy leads the series with Northern Illinois 2-1.

Evansville enters the weekend 2-5 on the season with impressive victories over UAB and Oklahoma State. Troy leads the all-time series with the Purple Aces 4-1, including a 2-0 mark at the Troy Softball Complex.
