12/17/2015 10:00:00 PM | Basketball (M)
DOTHAN, Alabama – It was a story of two halves, but the Troy men's basketball team's first half was enough as it defeated Paine College 85-77 at the Dothan Civic Center. John Walton III showed his seniority as he led the Trojans with his fourth career double-double, pouring in a career-high 22 points and reeling in a career-high 19 rebounds, one shy of Troy's Division I single game record.
Â
Wesley Person had a fiery first half as he sunk a career-high six treys on his way to 22 points. Person finished the night with 28 points, shooting 9-of-18 from the floor. Jordon Varnado narrowly missed a double-double performance as he tallied 16 points and eight boards. Kelton Ford's defensive showing allowed him to swipe four steals on the night, while B.J. Miller dished out four assists to lead Troy.
Â
In a game the Trojans' led for more than 38 minutes, it was the first half that allowed the Trojans to prevail. With Person's shot flowing, Troy was able to jump out to a 21-9 lead, in thanks to a 12-4 run with just under 12 minutes to play. After trading baskets with the Lions, a 5-0 run allowed them to cut the lead to two possessions at 27-21 with 6:19 to go in the first.
Â
Troy (5-5) confidently went on a 15-4 run to claim a 42-25 lead with 2:36 to play in the half. At the break, the Trojans distinctively led 47-28. Person led all scorers with 22 points, while the Trojans were shooting 45.5 percent (15-of-33) from the floor. Troy had just seven turnovers and accumulated 10 assists.
Â
However, Paine (2-9) would not go away. In the second half, Paine outscored Troy 49-39, but it wasn't enough to secure a win. Coming out of the break, the Lions went on a 7-2 run to cut the Trojans lead to 15 at 50-35 with just under 18 minutes to go. A burst of mini runs allowed the Lions to make it a five point game at 54-49 with 12:47 to play in the contest.
Â
Paine made it a game as it was all tied at 71 with 3:56 remaining on the clock. However, gritty free throw shooting  down the stretch allowed the Trojans to edge the Lions. 10 of the Trojans' final 12 points came at the charity stripe, as they finished the game shooting 73.8 percent (31-of-42).
Â
Turnovers proved to be costly for Troy, as it finished the night with 20, allowing Paine to outscore the Trojans 24-11 on points off turnovers.
