TROY, Alabama – Coming off a third-place finish at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic, No. 75 Troy heads to The Intercollegiate at The Grove Sunday through Tuesday for its final tournament of the fall season. The Trojans played well at the event last year as they turned in a second-place finish.
Troy's third-place finish at the AutoTrader.com two weeks ago was impressive as the field included eight teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 100. Clayton Vannoy was key to Troy's run up the leaderboard as he tied for fourth place, while Jared Bettcher tied for 10th and Cam Norman tied for 16th.
The Trojans have been explosive through their first four tournaments with 10 individual rounds in the 60s and 17 under par, last year's NCAA Regional team finished with 22 rounds in the 60s and 39 under par in 11 tournaments.
The top of Troy's lineup has been strong all year with four players with a 73.75 stroke average or lower. Bettcher leads the pack with a 72.50 mark, while Luke Moser is one overall shot behind Bettcher, which equals a 72.58 average. Bettcher is the lone Trojan to have his card count towards the team score in each round this year, while Moser, who had two rounds in the 60s and three under par last year, already has three rounds in the 60s and five under par this year.
Vannoy has Troy's lowest round of the year with his 5-under 66 at the Sun Belt Preview and he lowered his overall average to 73.25 with his strong play at the AutoTrader. Norman has a pair of top 25 finishes on the year to go with his 73.75 overall average.
Freshman Calum Masters will hold down the final spot in the lineup at the Invitational. He carries a 77.33 stroke average on the year and tied for 14th at the Sun Belt Preview. Sean Stone will compete as an individual for the Trojans as he is coming off his best tournament of the year, a 6-over 222 at the AutoTrader.
The Grove opened in 2012 and was designed by PGA tour player Greg Norman. His design incorporates the natural rolling hills, meandering stream beds and native grasses, which maintains the natural character of the site, while creating exciting play for golfers at every level.
Troy's pairing will be strong for the opening round as the Trojans will play with No. 26 Kentucky and No. 48 Lipscomb; they will go off No. 1 beginning at 9:09 a.m.
The rest of the field includes Middle Tennessee, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, UL Lafayette, College of Charleston, Abilene Christian, Western Kentucky, Southern Miss and Xavier.
