TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Troy's Giovani Samaha had already beaten players from Alabama and Ole Miss, but couldn't beat an opponent from Auburn and fell in the semifinals at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Sunday.
Samaha had already won four matches to reach the singles main draw semifinals, including one over a ranked opponent. However, he couldn't beat a second ranked opponent and fell to No. 107 Max Hinnisdaels of Auburn, 7-5, 6-3.
"I couldn't be more proud of Giovani for what he accomplished at the ITA Regionals this weekend," Troy head coach Scott Kidd said. "Doing what no other Trojan has done is a huge milestone for the program. When you think about all the great programs represented this weekend, not to mention the high level players competing here at this event, Giovani proved that he is among the best as well as showing future hope for Troy men's tennis. My hat goes off to him."
The tournament featured 14 teams from the ITA Southern Region, which covers Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Included in the field where players from two other Sun Belt teams in UL Lafayette and South Alabama, and five SEC teams in Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
In addition to being one of the final four singles players left in the event, Samaha also advanced to the round of 16 with his doubles partner, Pablo Moreno. The duo beat teams from LSU and Alabama before being eliminated.
Next up for Troy is the Big East Tennis Classic, which begins on Friday in New Orleans.
