Samaha Gets Ranked Win, Headlines Big Day at ITA Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The Troy men's tennis team had another successful day at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Friday, led by Giovani Samaha who picked up a ranked win and moved into the singles quarterfinals. Samaha and his doubles partner, Pablo Moreno, also won and advanced into the round of 16.

Troy is the only Sun Belt team with both a singles player and a doubles team still remaining in the main draws.

Samaha, one of two seniors on the Troy roster, started the day by teaming up with Moreno in the second round of the doubles draw where the Troy duo beat Alabama's Hayes Brewer and Sam Edwards, 8-7 (4).

Samaha then picked up two wins in singles action, first beating UL Lafayette's Arthur Libaud in the third round of the draw, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Samaha then battled through another three-set match, this one against a nationally-ranked player in Ricardo Jorge of Ole Miss.

Jorge, the second seed in the tournament and the 82nd-ranked player in the nation, won the first set but Samaha fought back for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. Samaha now moves onto Saturday's quarterfinals where he will face Tulane's Constantin Schmitz.

Prior to that match, Moreno and Samaha will face UL Lafayette's Will Huyton and Arthur Libaud in Saturday's doubles round of 16. Huyton and Libaud are one of the 5-8 seeds in the doubles draw. With a win, Troy would move on to play in the quarterfinals, which will also be played on Saturday.

Troy's Francisco Yim Kim also won on the day as he defeated Jacksonville State's Austin McCromick, 6-3, 6-1, in the consolation singles draw. Yim Kim will take on South Alabama's Juan Troglia in the singles consolation round of 16 on Saturday.
