Troy Gets Wins Over Alabama, LSU and Two Sun Belt Opponents

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The Troy men's tennis team began play at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Thursday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium and the Alabama Recreation Tennis Complex. On the tournament's opening day, the Trojans picked up doubles wins over LSU and South Alabama, as well as singles wins over Alabama and UL Lafayette.

Troy has four individuals in the tournament, which features 13 teams from Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Each of Troy's two doubles teams advanced to the second round of the main draw, while Giovani Samaha advanced to the third round of the singles main draw.

In doubles play, Pablo Moreno and Samaha, less than two weeks after beating the nation's 27th-ranked team, defeated LSU's Gabor Csonka and Simon Freud, 8-4. Troy's duo of Francisco Yim Kim and Andy Lau then defeated South Alabama's Tuki Jacobs Juan Troglia, 8-5.

The Troy teams are now two of 32 remaining doubles pairs and will paly their second round matches on Friday. Moreno and Samaha will take on Alabama's Hayes Brewer and Sam Edwards, while Yim Kim and Lau will face LSU's Justin Butsch and Tam Trinh.

In the singles main draw, Moreno was the lone Trojan playing in the first round, which is where he beat UL Lafayette's No. 1 player, Jake Wynan, in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-1. Moreno would go on to lose in the second round to Ole Miss' Filip Kraljevic, the 5th-ranked freshman in the nation.

Samaha picked up Troy's lone second round win as he beat Alabama's Edwards in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Samaha is one of 32 to advance to Friday's third round where he will take on Arthur Libaud of UL Lafayette. With a win, Samaha would play again on Friday in the Round of 16.

Lau and Yim Kim will all begin play in the singles consolation draw on Friday after second round losses in the main draw on Thursday. Complete results from all of Troy's matches are below.
