10/13/2015 2:52:00 PM | Golf (M)
DULUTH, Georgia – Clayton Vannoy fired a 1-over 73 in Tuesday's final round of the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic to lead Troy to a third-place finish in the event that featured two top 50 teams — No. 19 South Florida and No. 35 College of Charleston — and eight teams ranked in the top 100 in the latest Golfweek rankings; Troy entered the tournament ranked 75th nationally.
Troy entered the day in third place, but the Trojans found themselves five shots back of UNC Greensboro with five holes to play. Troy picked up four birdies – two by Jared Bettcher – over the final five holes to take back the third spot; the Trojans sealed the deal with birdies on No. 18 by Bettcher, Luke Moser and Calum Masters.
The Trojans moved to 12-1 on the season against Sun Belt opponents after finishing a shot up on Georgia State and 10 shots ahead of South Alabama.
Vannoy finished the 54-hole event tied for fourth place overall with a 3-under 213. The Pensacola, Fla., native had four birdies on the day and finished second in the field with 14 birdies over the three rounds. It was Vannoy's second top-10 and third top-25 finish of the year in Troy's four events.
Bettcher made the turn at 3-over par, but rallied to play the back of the course to a tune of 1-under thanks to three birdies. He shot 2-over for the day and 1-under for the tournament to finish in a tie for 10th place, his second top-10 finish of the year.
Cam Norman turned in his best final round of the season with a 2-under 70 to move into 16th place; he had been averaging a 78.33 in final rounds this season. He made the turn at 2-under thanks to a trio of birdies on the front nine. Norman traded a birdie for a bogey on the back of the course to close out his day.
Moser made the turn at 3-over after a tough start with double-bogeys on No. 3 and No. 5, but the Trojan junior, who tied for 34th, responded with three birdies, including a clutch one on No. 18 to finish with a 3-over card.
Calum Masters was around the pin all day and finished with a pair of birdies and a round of 4-over; he tied for 60th place. Playing as an individual, Sean Stone had a pair of birdies in his final round and tied for 45th place overall after a 2-over 74 on Tuesday.
Lipscomb took the team title by eight shots over South Florida after shooting a tournament record 25-under par 839, while Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong claimed individual medalist honors with a tournament record 16-under 200.
The Trojans wrap up their fall schedule in two weeks at the Intercollegiate at The Grove hosted by Middle Tennessee on Oct. 25-27 in College Grove, Tenn.
