Trojans Fall to ULM in Overtime

TROY, Alabama –With the game tied at 50, ULM opened overtime play with six straight points and the deficit was too much for the Troy men's basketball team as it dropped a tightly contested, 58-55, overtime game to the Warhawks on Thursday night.
Four Trojans tallied double figures, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Warhawks. Musa Abdul-Aleem paced Troy with 17 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Kevin Thomas earned his 11th career double-double, seventh of the season, reeling in a game-high 11 boards and chipping in 10 points. Thomas also tied a career-high with four blocks. Wesley Person and John Walton added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Troy (7-12, 2-8) and ULM went back and forth for the final minutes of the contest. Person and the Trojans to take a 50-47 lead with 3:17 to play, but the Warhawks' Mack Foster responded with 1:18 to play to force the overtime.
Midway through the second half, ULM went on a 7-0 run while holding Troy scoreless for just over five minutes. The Trojans and Warhawks traded baskets, but hot shooting from beyond the arc allowed ULM to tie the game up at 44. Prior to the run, the Trojans led the Warhawks from 15:34 left in the first half up until ULM tied it at 44 with 8:50 remaining in the contest.
The Trojans led going into the break for the fifth straight game, 31-21. The Trojans were shooting 4-of-9 from 3-point range and shot only four free throws, making three.
To open the game, ULM jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Troy responded with 14-straight points as it took a 14-6 lead. In the 14-0 run, the Warhawks were held scoreless for nearly eight minutes, as they shot 0-of-11 from the floor. A few scoring droughts by Troy allowed ULM to chip away at the Trojans' lead, but Troy held on for a 31-21 lead at the break.
ULM (13-8, 7-3) was led by Majok Deng and Mack Foster as both chipped in 15 points for the Warhawks. Tylor Ongwae led the Warhawks on the glass as he scooped up nine rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. ULM's bench outscored Troy 18-1.
In the game, Troy shot 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the floor. The Trojans went 7-of-19 from long range in the game, but was 0-of-2 in overtime. Free throw shooting stung Troy down the stretch as Troy shot 8-of-16 on the night.
The Trojans hit the road for their next three games. First up, it will travel to Arlington, Texas as it faces UT Arlington at the College Park Center at 7:30 p.m.
