Free Throw Shooting Pushes Troy Past UT Arlington
1/31/2015 10:41:00โฏPM | Basketball (M)
ARLINGTON, Texas โ Kelton Ford hit a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining to give the Troy men's basketball team a 55-54 win over UT Arlington on Saturday night. The Trojans shot 20-of-25 (80 percent) from the line to give them the edge over the Mavericks.
ย
John Walton III, who earned his second double-double, posted a career night with 18 points, in large part to his 10-of-12 showing from the charity stripe. Freshman Wesley Person shot 4-of-5 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc on his way to 13 points, his 17th career game in double figures. Person also reeled in a career-high seven boards.
ย
Troy (8-12, 3-8) trailed by as many as 10 in the game, but continuously fought back. Trailing 49-41 with 5:57 to play, the Trojans went on a 10-0 run to take their first lead, 51-49, since 11:24 in the first half.
ย
UT Arlington (12-9, 6-5) took a 52-51 lead with 2:03 to go after getting three chances on the offensive end of the court. On the ensuing possession, Walton drew a foul and sank both from the FT line.ย UTA's Lonnie McClanahan gave the Mavericks the lead back, 54-53, as he was fouled on the opposite end of the court and sank both free throws.
ย
Troy held the ball with just under 20 seconds to play and Ford drove down the lane and drew the foul. With just three seconds on the clock, both of Ford's free throws touched nothing but net. The Mavs threw up a long, last second three in a last-second effort, but it was too much as Troy walked away with its first Sun Belt road win of the season.
ย
Troy trailed for the first time in six games heading into the break, 32-22, after being held without a field goal for the final 7:15 of the first half. The Trojans made just five baskets, three of which were 3-pointers, as they were shooting 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from the floor.
ย
To open the second half, Walton sunk a pair of free throws to cut into the Mavs' lead, but they responded with a duo of their own. Troy went on a 12-3 run to trail by just one at 37-36 with 12:57 remaining. UT Arlington responded with a pair of dunks that seemed to ignite their squad, but Troy responded with a quick bucket.
ย
UTA jumped out again to an eight-point lead with hot shooting, but Troy was relentlessly chipping away at their lead with a 10-0 run.
ย
UT Arlington was led by Greg Gainey, who paced the Mavericks with 15 points. Kaelon Wilson led the Mavs with eight boards. Lonnie McClanahan, UTA's leading scorer, tallied just 10 points on the night as he shot 2-of-6 from the floor, but remained perfect at the free throw line, shooting 6-of-6.
ย
In the game, Troy shot 15-of-47 (31.9 percent) from the floor while UT Arlington shot 19-of-54 (35.2 percent). From long range, Troy outshot UTA, shooting 5-of-18 to its 5-of-27.ย
ย
Troy continues its road stretch as it travels to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to face Arkansas State on Thursday. The Trojans and Red Wolves are slated to tip at 7:15 p.m.
