GAINESVILLE, Florida – The Troy men's tennis team will open its spring season with a trio of matches this weekend in Florida, including a pair of matches at ranked opponents.
Â
The Trojans will first take on No. 13 Florida on Friday at 2 p.m. CST. Troy will then face a doubleheader on Saturday as they travel to play at Florida A&M at 9 a.m. CST and No. 35 Florida State at 2 p.m. CST.
Â
Troy, under second-year head coach Scott Kidd, returns three letterwinners from last year's team, including two All-Sun Belt performers in Gabriel Dias and Daniel Bustamante.
Â
Dias, after a strong fall season, enters the spring ranked 12th in the ITA Southern Region singles rankings. Dias won the C.L. Varner Memorial in the fall and also advanced to the third round at the ITA Southern Regional.
Â
Bustamante had one of the best performances of the fall as he advanced to the pre-qualifying finals of the ITA Men's All-American Championships. Bustamante defeated opponents from UTSA, Valparaiso and Wake Forest before falling to a player from North Carolina in the finals.
Â
The Troy roster features eight newcomers in 2014-15, including Giovani Samaha who had a strong fall season. Samaha and Troy's third returner, Pablo Moreno, enters the spring ranked eighth in the ITA Southern Region doubles rankings.
