Trojans Set to Open Cross Country Season

Troy, Ala. - The Troy University cross country team opens its 2014 season on Fri., Aug. 29, at Battleship Memorial Parkway in Mobile, Ala. The women's 4k race will begin at 5:30 p.m., while the men's 6k race will start promptly at 6 p.m.

This marks the first meet for Elliott Blount as a head coach. The Trojans take on Auburn, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi and Auburn-Montgomery.

"The South Alabama season opener is a great way to kick off the season," Blount said. "The races are a bit shorter than the championship distances, which allows us to get creative with our race strategy. I'm very excited to see how well these men and women compete."

Julia Ostendorf returns to the squad after competing in the 2013 NCAA South Region Championships where she finished 101st overall with a time of 21:59.64, beating her previous season-best 6k time of 22:05. The women's team, consisting of six freshmen, nine sophomores, one junior and one senior, was picked to finish eighth in Sun Belt preseason polls.

The men's squad, consisting of fourteen freshmen and six sophomores, was picked to come in ninth in the Sun Belt preseason polls. Troy is led by sophomores Tim Bulger and Sean Kent.

Bulger, who competed in all seven races of the 2013 season, finished first on the team at the Georgia State Invitational, which earned him Sun Belt Runner of the Week honors. Bulger also finished third overall at the Coach "O" Invitational with a time of 29:17.65, and placed 50th overall and third on the team at the Sun Belt Championships.

Kent, who also ran in all seven meets the Trojans competed in, finished first on the team at the Azalea City Classic, finishing in 26:24.81. He then placed second on the team at the Sun Belt Championships with a time of 27:58.7. He also placed second on the team at the Georgia State Invitational, behind Bulger.  At the Coach "O" Invitational , he finished fourth overall.
